As moderator of several tribes - ones of the moment, created on a whim.. that are now dead and inactive... I would love to have the ability to delete them entirely. Or at least, put in a request to have someone park it off line somehow, on the back side?
I'm thinking that if you gave the Delete Tribe function to moderators, there might be opportunites for some to abuse it - by vying to be made moderator of a tribe.. and then deleting it from existance.
Hmm... maybe if the members of the tribe agreed to the deletion first? Or if nobody objects within a certain length of time?

Re: Deleting old, dead tribes would be a welcome new feature.
Tue, November 25, 2008 - 12:16 AMThere are cases where this would definitely be the right thing to do. We don't have that feature right now, but there are two common conditions with different best solutions:
1) If the tribe is very personal to someone and they were really the sole source of information and content, then in general they should be able to decide they don't want it to persist. The best way to do that now is to delete all the members (but NOT you, the moderator, please) then make the Tribe private. You can then remove it from your home page and it becomes a ghost in the database. We can not now, but we will be able to flush old ghosts out of the database.
2) If the tribe was active at one point and of more than purely personal interest, the best course of action is for the moderator to abdicate and invite another member to moderate. If more than one person would like to, there's an election mechanism we can respond to.
Both processes need better support in the interface. -

But what if the former moderator is long gone? I've tried to gain mod status on several abandoned tribes, to try and reenergize them, but have never received a response from tribe. -

Re: Deleting old, dead tribes would be a welcome new feature.
Wed, November 26, 2008 - 10:04 PMTribes without moderators need to elect a new moderator. Send the election results to help@tribe.net, indicating the URL of the tribe and thread showing who has been elected. I will make that person moderator.
Please note that I do not have access to anything sent before 10 November! -

Re: Deleting old, dead tribes would be a welcome new feature.
Sun, January 18, 2009 - 9:22 PMFollow the procedure above. If the tribe is too inactive to support a vote, call for a new moderator in the Tribe. If nobody responds, send an email to help@tribe.net with the URL's and we can appoint a new moderator. We're happy to have people interested in curating Tribe's content. -

Re: Deleting old, dead tribes would be a welcome new feature.
Mon, January 19, 2009 - 9:04 AMYup. This seems to be working now. I'm happy to try an breathe some new life into some comatose tribes, and I'm pleased that Tribe is willing to let me give it a whirl.

Re: Deleting old, dead tribes would be a welcome new feature.
Mon, January 19, 2009 - 10:29 AMwhat if you cant get into the tribe since the moderator left?
in that case you couldn't start a new thread because you have to join to post. -

Re: Deleting old, dead tribes would be a welcome new feature.
Mon, January 19, 2009 - 12:22 PMEstablish correspondence with someone who is active in the tribe and ask them to initiate the election. If no one appears to be active in a particular tribe, write to help@tribe.net and we'll look into it. -
