Clean the Cruft

There are a lot of tribes that were started and abandoned and serve no use but to distract folks or clog up categories.

It would be useful to have some sort of bot which would "nudge" moderators of these tribes to do something with them, delete them or take them private. Criteria I see to automate the identification of cruft might include

1. Tribes with zero members
2. Tribes with no activity in the past year
3. Tribes that are clearly failed spam or advertising

I don't think it is appropriate to complain about news of somebody's baby or a memorial site or somesuch, but a lot of Tribes are clearly worthless husks, of no interest or redeemable social value. I believe Yahoo Groups has a tool such as this which clears out inactive groups after a certain time, but maybe a tool to flag or nominate tribes for review? A nudge-counter to identify tribes that are worthless?

Our space is cluttered with vapid emptiness, much of it long-abandoned.

Maybe - but I have been know to read and enjoy "dead" tribes.... and sometimes used them to contact people who share interests and get further information.....

Still, a tribe with one or no members is a blogg - not a tribe... thats what home pages are for... Some of these Tribes have nothing beyond a name ... maybe they should go if they are old and not being used..

Which is why a policy, system or mechanism for such things would be useful. Just as posts can be tagged as a scam or offensive or somesuch, Tribe cruft could be marked beginning some sort of process. If I park my car on the side of the road it will be ticketed and then eventually towed. Such a complaint-driven system wtih clear rules and a timely opportunity for the moderator or members to remedy the situation does not seem unreasonable. The rules would be similar, I imagine, as those for abandoned property: complaint, marking, notice, then removal.
