Freeze, pin, read new, and no pics

First let me apologize if this repeats someone else's efforts...

1) Freeze topic - Frequently I have seen confusion from people bumping a very old topic and dates or prices are wrong. For example, the announcement for last year's decompression party is causing confusion in this year's LA Burners tribe. If the moderator could have frozen it when it was posted, or just after the event, then this confusion could have been avoided without losing the data contained for posterity.

2) Pin Topic - This allows the moderator to pin a topic at the top of the list. This is particularly handy in FAQ tribes when you want the rules of that tribe to remain at the top. But any tribe with a topic might want announcements, events, etc to stay at the top regardless of the conversations that come after. Pin and freeze would make for excellent combinations.

3) Read New (thread)- after about 80 or 90 posts, particularly if they're lengthy ones, it can be hard to find imbedded new posts (which isn't helped by the rollover color being the same as the "new post" color). It's all good when they're at the end of the page, but it can quite a search to find them in these stacked threads. Clicking the asterisk next to a new thread could lead directly to the first new post (or whatever).

4) No pictures - The image server can sometimes really drag down the experience. Having a "pictures off" switch would reduce the hits on the image server, and help rock people's experience. This would also help those people with content sensitive environments (work, home with kids, etc).

What to do about off posters who are always off topic? What about when I want to be off topic? Surely there is a General DIscussion tribe to direct those people to...

tribe.net thingy part 1 and 2

part 1

tribe is up, tribe is down
cyclical this tribe.net thingy
occurring again and again
like some personality trait
some way of disposition
identifying tribe as tribe

so goes tribe, on and on
up, down, all over again
enduring ever so uniquely
within the history of time
tribe as only tribe can be
our place to hang and jam

part 2

tribe.net still up, down, whatever
many like me still hanging around
seemingly we’re a natural thingy
inherent to tribe’s basic evolution
sharing in some learning process
integral to tribe’s struggle to go on
unique and yet mutual characters
kind of giving tribe a distinct flavor
identifiable within a cluttered web
as a thing doing the tribe.net thingy

ABUSE OF THE "FLAG"

When someone puts a "flag" on a photo, it should also post their tribe name as well to Identify who is going around and flagging nearly every single photo. As it is now, one can go through & flag every photo in a tribe with no accountability whatsoever. I'm saying that some folks are abusing the flag system.

I, myself, have never felt the need to flag a photo. I think it should be removed totally IMHO.

tribe issues

tribe issues

...really getting burned out from getting bumped out of being logged-in so often. Tribe seems to have many issues now that I don't remember having a few years ago. I am at about a 50/50 chance of actually being able to log-in and even then, when I go to a tribe I often get bumped out then. Tribe is becoming less & less convenient to use. There just seems to be too many problems too often.

P.S. Plus, I hate the "flag" thing - people who go around flagging everything should be held accountable, their user name should be there to show who flagged pics, threads etc. I have people who go through every single pic in a couple tribes of mine who flag everything rendering the flag useless & worthless.

Here are the kind of people we really need a database on - out of control law enforcement officers.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ySjyRpq5tY8

CNN reports that police are accused of having robbed at least 150 drivers in Tenaha, Texas. The amount stolen is close to $3 million, says a lawyer who has filed a class action suit against the town and police department there.

Some of the victims (who are mostly African American) said that when they complained to the police about the police, the police threatened to take the victims' children away.

In one case, the district attorney sent a couple who'd been robbed a form letter to sign that said, in exchange for forfeiting the $6000 that had been stolen from them, "...no criminal charges shall be filed...and our children shall not be turned over to [child protective services]."

The video is loaded with lots of other tragicomically sordid details.

Promising economic news that is beneath the Histrionic ( all No’Bama all the time) media hype:

Re-fi mortgage applications rose by 41.5%.
Source the Mortgage Bankers Association announcement just last week

Just this last February New Home sales rose 4.7%

The Commerce Department announced orders for durable goods rose 3.4% in February.
Economists were expecting a 1.2% decline in durable goods orders.

Unemployment is still not as bad as it was during a couple years of Reagan’s administration. AND the declining numbers are stabilizing.
The stock market has been on the resurgence

Since March 9, the S&P 500 has been up by about 20% The best month long run on about 30 years.

A forum for Tribe on GetSatisfaction.com

This one is an idea that has already been acted on - you can find the new forum at

http://getsatisfaction.com/tribe

GetSatisfaction is a consumer site which, as far as I know, has no affiliation with Tribe or anybody working for Tribe, and which doesn't seem willing to censor posts.

Comments:

1. While I did start this new forum, I do not, in any sense, serve as its moderator. Any complaints about user misconduct on the forum will have to be take up with the site's staff, who seem to moderate with a very light hand.

2. GetSatisfaction should not be seen as being exclusively a customer complaint site, though customer complaints are welcomed on it.

3. Mr. Pinkus and anybody else at Tribe - I made sure to include Mr. Pinkus' Typepad blog as the contact url, when I started the new forum, so the staff at the site will know who he is (if they didn't already). GetSatisfaction allows users to register as employees (and official representatives) of a company. GetSatisfaction is a reasonably high profile site, so staff might a little added visibility for Tribe by being there, especially if they have positive news to share.

4. I don't believe that users will be unjustly censored on this new forum, but if they are, I've created a group on Google, where complaints about moderatorial abuse on the new forum will be welcomed. But, again, so will the staff of Tribe and of GetSatisfaction.com, so if somebody wishes to make up something, he should do so knowing that a rebuttal might be on its way. The Googlegroup is located at

http://groups.google.com/group/tribe_net/

That, I do own and moderate - it's an unofficial forum, marked clearly as such - so I can offer some promises about moderation there. One of which is that as long as you don't troll - and I do make some effort to define what trolling is - you will be extremely free to express your views there, even ones critical of Tribe, without fear of Tribe deleting them.

Not that they'd ever do that, of course, but if they wouldn't be able to do so there, or at GetSatisfaction, either - though I could be wrong about the latter. Please pass the word on, without doing anything that violates Tribe's TOS, of course.

> You may not upload photos that portray pornography, obscenity, or sexually explicit conduct

clearly artistic nudity (a recognized part of the photographic art) does not fall in the caterogies above, yet all the artistic nudity photos that i posted in some tribes have been removed.
i Love the format...
i love that it is NOT a Den of censorship...
we love Wendy...

but I have to tell you that when Tribe's LOG ON...
Says that it is DOWN For "Scheduled Maintanance" DURRING THE DAY On a SAT or SUN...
it makes it Look like Tribe does not give a Rats BUTT about its users...

STOP Saying it is a 'Schedualed maintanance'...
if it is NOT (Scheduled) It makes you LOOK BAD.
Makes those who use the site think you DO NOT CARE About us.

How about starting to LET people KNOW what the problems are... ?
Seems like there would be ALOT more patcience and understanding...
and a Desire to Support Tribe if we can...
Not an Adversarial relationship...

I want tribe to know that if they had a way for me to contribute a couple of dollars a month (for what i get for free) I would do that to keep it alive... and i bet a whole lot of other people/(Poor Artists like me and others) would too... but $20 a month is TOO Much for me to afford... if that was the cost to use tribe I would Fly away...
I don't even need a star.
any one else feel this way?

Deleting old, dead tribes would be a welcome new feature.

As moderator of several tribes - ones of the moment, created on a whim.. that are now dead and inactive... I would love to have the ability to delete them entirely. Or at least, put in a request to have someone park it off line somehow, on the back side?

I'm thinking that if you gave the Delete Tribe function to moderators, there might be opportunites for some to abuse it - by vying to be made moderator of a tribe.. and then deleting it from existance.

Hmm... maybe if the members of the tribe agreed to the deletion first? Or if nobody objects within a certain length of time?

Moderators on tribe / option

So while looking at some tribes, and joining some tribes, something popped up in my mind. For them moderators on tribe, well for anyone, what happens lets say if for some reason we want to join a tribe, but the moderator dies, and we can't get to join that site any more because the moderator's not "available" I know "most" tribes you can get in just like that, but what about them others that needs the moderators decision? I know it's kind of a far off topic or a question, but I think it would be good if there was an option to have at least another moderator or three moderators for a tribe. Like in any business there's a "President", "Vice-President" and so on-

Down for Maintenance: more info?

these ideas have likely already been offered up and maybe tossed out.

i'd really like to know more about what goes on when tribe is down for maintenance. could tribe email everyone to inform us about what's going on, what the improvements or maintenance are, what they will do to improve the experience, and how long it will be down? if not a mass mailing to all of our email addys, then can you post the same info on the "down for maintenance" page so that when we try to come to tribe and find it down we can read some info about why tribe is down and why it will be better?

short version: why is tribe down? email us or post reasons on the main page when tribe is down.

i really think people would cut tribe a whole lot more slack if we knew the basics of what's going on. it is often down for maintenance, and so very often the connection gets reset and the page loading fails.

i know tribe is free, i appreciate the work put into it, i'm sure it's a thankless job. but at some point the downs and page load failures, the inability to post pictures or threads/blogs, missing pictures/pages/friends, etc. outweigh the usefulness of the website.

thanks again for all your efforts. a little info would go a long way. happy friday.

Yes on Prop 8 ads

I've been a heavy Tribe.net user for more than 5 years. I've created and moderated several Tribes with several hundred members. But I am having a lot of trouble seeing how I can remain a member in good conscience, after logging in today and being barraged with Yes on Proposition 8 ads.

Have you no shame, Tribe.net? Are you completely disconnected from the values and demographics of your base?

It is outrageous that you would accept money from a transparently discriminatory lobby that targets a disproportionate number of your own users. It sickens me.

I come here, as I have every day for years, and I have to look at these pictures of little children, and read that they will be protected by a constitutional amendment outlawing gay marriage. Protected from whom?

The technical disaster that this site has become is hard enough to swallow, but this ... this is morally reprehensible. Shame on you, and your willingness to cash in on the politics of hate. Shame on you!

I own the SF Citadel and our Tribe "SF The Citadel" recently had 2500 members. Because of the problems recently with tribe down so much of the time, we have lost quite a few members.

Today it was down again for a few hours.

What is going on? When will it be stable again and what are the ideas management has to bring back the members who have left?

Please let us know. I hate the fact we are losing members.

Thanks

PRWEB: New Tribe mngmnt agreement with New Systems Associates

SAN FRANCISCO (PRWEB)

(2008-Nov-10) -- Utah Street Networks and New Systems Associates today entered into an operating agreement to manage www.tribe.net [Tribe.net, one of the first social networking sites], add competitive social networking features to the site, and revitalize the Tribe community.

The first priorities for New Systems Associates are to stabilize the platform and improve the site's performance. To accomplish these goals, the company is committing substantial resources to upgrade Tribe's hardware and application. The hardware migration will begin immediately, resulting in better performance and stability users expect from a world-class social network. New Systems Associates will also add new features to improve connections within the Tribe community and to other social networks and widgets.

In the longer term, New Systems Associates will grow the Tribe community by developing features including advanced privacy features, profile control, regional relevancy, personal discovery, and free-range connectivity. The company is committed to strengthening Tribe's alternative community and the unique ways in which users interact.

"This is nothing but good news for the Tribe.net community," said Darren Mckeeman, Tribe.net's IT Director. "New Systems Associates will inject sorely needed resources and manpower into the management and everyday operation of Tribe.net. They will develop the site along the growth path that has already been established."

Utah Street Networks, Inc. is the owner of Tribe.net, one of the oldest social networking sites on the Internet and pioneers of social graphing.

New Systems Associates is an LLC formed by long-time Tribe members who believe in protecting and expanding Tribe's unique culture.

*******************
funny that this comes by way of a tribe friend on the east coast and not from Tribe itself. :-P

I think tribe should have some kind of system or thing that would let people know your "real" rather then someone who just posted a picture of their friend or who ever. Have a Verification Photo, like as an "option" a person doesn't really need to do it, but it lets people know your really the person in the photo", have an instruction saying you need to put your "Tribe name" on a paper or what ever with your face clearly visible. Example; if I were to do it I would put my name on my paper saying my name "Ted" and some where on the paper I'd put "Tribe.net" or the place to find your page, then it would be something like "www.tribe.net/tatchak" Well if we were to do that it would be "optional" and you'd be able to put that certain photo on your main page.. Like when you add them "optional things like the text, blog, lists, ext. Well that was just my thought...

I have not been able to log into my tribe account for more than a month now.

If there is a tribe staff person who can get my account working again, I will pay a $30 reward to you or to Tribe.net.

My email address is patrickharvard@gmail.com
at least let us get our blogs and connections before you kill this box.

Site performance issues

You might know this already, but I haven't been able to use your site all week, and I see many of my Tribe.net friends back on myspace for the first time in a long time. I know that the problem isn't just happening to me.

Even after the site was restored from the downtime, I am experiencing the worst performance in my 2+ year history of using Tribe. This is the first message I have been able to post in days.

When I access the site, I most often get "server busy" errors or "page cannot be displayed" Occasionally I'll get my main page after a long wait and numerous attempts, but then when I click on anything I get "server busy" or "page cannot be displayed" So the site basically barely works. I have checked 4-5 times a day through the week.

You might want to fix these issues before you lose many of your userbase to other social networking sites. I love tribe, but if it doesn't work, then it doesn't work.

Good luck and thanks for providing us with this service

I had a MySpace account until I just couldn't take it any more.
And it was a horrible fucking Soul-Crushing waste of time.
HowEver, there was one thing I liked better about it;
The fact that one could organize their photographs InTo different folders.

On Tribe the first pictures that we post just keep getting pushed back and back InTo infinity.
The only reason that I haven't created an art/photo tribe yet is because I'm trying to think a way around this issue.

Any suggestions or reasoning?

Popular Tribes List

It should be longer. Maybe 100. Sure, the top three or five or so, could be highlighted above like with their icon or something. But their should be a longer list that is available. There are a bazillion tribes out there and a lot of them are very inactive. Its hard to sift through them all and it really limits the growth of good tribes that aren't about burning man etc.

blocking option

I'd like to suggest for a blocking option to be available here on Tribe, which, if necessary, you can block someone from searching for you here or from completely seeing your profile, and it also blocks you from seeing theirs. They have that option available in Facebook and I think it's great.

I know that other mail is usually where you never know what you will get, but it seems that most of "other mail" is spam trying to sell me ringtones. Any ideas for a "spam" button that can be placed underneath a message which will flag that the account is sending out spam and hopefully the account will be deleted if enough people do it. Yeah, I know its like MySpace because these jokers can just create another account so maybe there is no point.

I know it's possible to either have friends blogs on my home page or not, but is it possble to decide who of my friends blogs are shown? There are at least a couple thay just seem to post endless infantile countdowns to wierd and wonderful events of such miniscule importance, that I don't get to see the more interetsing stuff people have written, and they are monumentally infuriating. Seems to be all or nothing or am i missing something obvious? Or could tribe tweek the controls so only one blog per poster is shown at any one time?

I want to be able to do searches for words in tribe titles specifically and it doesn't seem to offer that option. It just shows a bunch of threads with the word somewhere in it, mainly, and is very unclear.

Also, when you are in tribe browse you have no way to get back to home, or anywhere.

Not user-friendly, in my opinion.

Future of Tribe

I've read a lot of rumors about Tribe's supposed impending doom, but all it seems to be are people saying they've been reading a lot of rumors and speculation about the future of Tribe.

Maybe it's uncouth to ask this, but is there anything from an actual credible source concerning Tribe's future? Are people getting worked up over nothing? If Tribe does go bye-bye, will there be some warning or will we just get the "Donut freak out" page for a while until we decide to give up?

I'm not saying that I expect a definitive answer from Tribe's administrators, especially since it is a business. But if it is possible to address this in some way that could either put minds at ease or help members prepare for a future without Tribe, I think it would be useful. Again, maybe I'm being uncouth, but I can't find anyone directly asking about the future of the site and I'd rather ask the question than sit back and read yet another "what'll happen without tribe" thread.
Premium service--when does it register on one's home page?

I'm so glad that Tribe is taking steps to pull itself up out of the mire. I just bought my premium membership to show my support. This site is too valuable to the belly dance community to disappear!

My question is this--since I've become a premium member, when does the little premium button (the one that links to paypal) and message at the top of my home page go away?

This site is pathetic

No offense, but I've been with you guys for almost 2 years now & see now that this site has completely gone down the shitter.

-Dead Tribes that just hang around with no one posting in them for months on end.

-EXTREMELY slow loading times. Today, it took my homepage over a minute to load. And that happens ALL THE TIME.

-Frequently shutting down the entire site for "maintenance" for hours & sometimes a WHOLE DAY. Thats just unacceptable guys.

-A complete lack of any sort of innovation.

I could go on, but I think thats enough. Seriously, are you guys even trying anymore?? If you're gonna just sit around with your thumbs up your butts, lets get it out in the open & say it so we can either try to fix it or just move on.

Im under the impression that if you're just gonna let the site stagnate, just shut the damn thing down. Don't half-ass it because its insulting to yourselves & to your users.

What I Like About Tribe

Here are some things I like about Tribe. What's more is that they're marketable things:

(1) Discussions
(2) Thoughtful, intelligent people
(3) Easy to navigate to existing discussions and easy to discover related tribes
(4) A LACK of flash and fanciness
(5) Fast-loading, no-nonsense (reminds me of Google and Yahoo in that sense)
(6) An older, more mature user base

Now, these things are all strong marketing points. In fact, the last one is probably the best of all because the above-30 user base has huge amounts of money to spend on products and services, and even on membership fees should it come to that.

I'm very surprised that nobody has come forth to either run it or buy it. There are still large numbers of people coming to Tribe. Sure, it's not MySpace, and never will be MySpace. But then I spend about 5 minutes on MySpace and about 30 minutes on Tribe. I think TSV (time spent viewing) should count for a lot in the netsphere. I know it counts for a lot in broadcasting. For one, it means that viewers will stick around for more impressions, and impressions are what sells. As an advertiser, you don't begin to sell until about the 8th impression. It's more likely that Tribe will deliver those 8 impressions than MySpace will because people will be flipping through pages longer.

TIRED OF TROLLING TO FIND COOL NEW TRIBES?

I had thought about starting a tribe called new tribes tribe
you know it is so hard to boost your tribes w\ithout being a troll or nuisance

so I thought about perhaps starting a tribe called new tribes

<<<Not only limited to New tribes...but all tribes that are looking for fresh voices, enlightenment, and more participation>>>>

In this tribe you can post info. about your tribes...perhaps provide links to your most interesting threads in your past topical archives

also ask others to make deals to invite 3 or more of thier friends to your tribe.......
(certain friends that they feel would be intested in that tribe)
And you would agree also to do the same for their tribe

So in that thread titled after the name of your tribe...others will sign on to deals with you to boost each others tribe\tribes with 3 or more invites of close friends

Of course to do this you both must join each others tribes to activate the invite friends to tribe option
ALSO PROVIDE IN THAT THREAD LINKS TO YOUR TRIBE

responders will intern join your tribe and post links to their tribe...and contact you both in your thread and personally to ensure a quick response and to make sure both parties are interested in endorsing each others tribe idea

In threads it is also encouraged that you let others know what you think about these new tribes....but, be nice...even if you don't agree....It's called constructive critisism
I hate deleating threads...In fact, I have never had to deleate a single thread or remove a single person from any of my 13 tribes.....

Tribe has gone through a lot of changes the last couple of years.

I've been in for the highs and lows, and glad to see our community is making such a comeback.

So much so in fact that I'm starting to notice significant slowdowns at certain times of the day.

I know we all like to have Tribe running in the background while we're at work,

So I think it might be time to UPGRADE THE BANDWIDTH, FELLAS!!!

Tribe is beginning to remind me of AOL in 1997.

Lol, I know that's harsh but I call 'em as I sees em.

Much Love, Tribe!!!! Now how about that second T1, eh?

• if I visit a profile it'd be nice to know if I am ignored (ie pointless trying to send them a message)

It would be nice if Tribe didn't bog down so much when viewing anything. Initially it is slow to load, then when switching to members pictures, they dont come in or need to be repeatedly reloaded to show it.
The numbers dont add up either. I dont know if I have 112 or 117 friends or not.
The email and alerts are always doubled.
Is tribe going through growing pains or is it lack of growth pains?

to have the ability to leave multiple tribes at once. I love Tribe more than almost any other online community, but I have not had much time to devote to Tribe (or any recreation, really) for almost 2 years now, since I went back to school full time. Before I went back to school, I had a pretty slackeriffic desk job, so I belonged to well over 100 tribes. I am now trying to pare them down significantly so that I can sneak onto Tribe during much-deserved study breaks without feeling motivated by guilt and/or temptation to check in on 100+ tribes, and I have to say that it really does take a LONG time having to do them one by one. As long as there was a confirmation page or pop-up to prevent people from accidentally leaving tribe(s), I think that a check box feature would be wonderful to manage multiple tribe memberships.

Clean the Cruft

There are a lot of tribes that were started and abandoned and serve no use but to distract folks or clog up categories.

It would be useful to have some sort of bot which would "nudge" moderators of these tribes to do something with them, delete them or take them private. Criteria I see to automate the identification of cruft might include

1. Tribes with zero members
2. Tribes with no activity in the past year
3. Tribes that are clearly failed spam or advertising

I don't think it is appropriate to complain about news of somebody's baby or a memorial site or somesuch, but a lot of Tribes are clearly worthless husks, of no interest or redeemable social value. I believe Yahoo Groups has a tool such as this which clears out inactive groups after a certain time, but maybe a tool to flag or nominate tribes for review? A nudge-counter to identify tribes that are worthless?

Our space is cluttered with vapid emptiness, much of it long-abandoned.

More "Edit Style" Choices, Please!

Hello,

So, I thought I'd check out all your new "customize your homepage" features. But they don't seem all that new at all. Just easier to find. For instance, I felt like changing up the look of my page but when I clicked on "Edit Style", I was disappointed to find the same nine choices you guys have been offering for years. I daresay that's gotten rather old. Any plans to add some new, fun, creative choices or allow users to cut & paste html layout codes? I've loved Tribe for a while now but it's looked the same for SO long now. Come on, folks, shake it up a bit!

That's right, I'm a mischievous troublemaker. And I know i'm not alone.

Hugs,
-MamaSanyo

Sure, tribes have their description pane, but it would be cool to have a FAQ page as well. Particularly if it could be editted one entry at a time as well as a bulk edit, if you could have pictures that accompany the entries, and it could be maintained by multiple tribe members.

Remove the term "Pastafarian" as an "official" religious option in profiles.

Tribe.net is a great place for free ideas and seems very accepting. But when I went to fill in my religion in my profile (and though I didnt expect it to be listed) I was confronted with a mockery of our name, Ras TafarI. Our Name is very personal and sacred and I feel that tribe.net is not being all it could be by choosing to offically include an insulting mockery of it in areas that everyone is confronted with. I applaud tribe.net for having the courage to provide a space for "pastafarians" to legally express themselves, though the legality of such expression is currently under review, But feel that its offical promotion through its decision to include the term pastafarian as a preset option in a members relgious profile, a term that is taken as mocking, racist, and oppresive to millions of people is itself a decleration of support for racism, relgious paritality, and close minded hatred. I think that pastafarians or anyone for that matter should have a choice to "write in" thier religion, but I should not for example be able to appeal to tribe to list my religion- As Followers of the "f*ck the Fags" god, For everyone to see. Thanks for your time. Please help tribe be a place free of oppresion.

TIPS AND TRICKS for using tribe.

I would like to use this thread (as many others must have been in the past) to offer different tips that users might have for making tribe easier to use.

Here's one that many people probably know and still many others may not.

FINDING NEW POSTS IN LONG THREADS
-move cursor into text in thread (ie right here would work>>><<<)

-Press ctrl+F - (that is hold down ctrl and press F)

-a small window should pop up that says "Find" and a text box

-enter the words "new post" in the text box and ckick [find next]

-this should bring you to the first new post in the thread, if there are mult new posts you can keep clicking [find next] and it will bring you down the page.

PLEASE ADD ANY OTHER TIPS OR COMMENTS ON MY POST to this thread
Also I know this is not a staff moderated tribe, so please feel free to repost to any official tribes you wish as I will not be doing so.

its the only thing that could make tribe better right now.

If you could bookmark certain threads that our interesting to you so you can find them once they are buried under others.

also a "my recent posts" on your homepage would be mice so you don't have to go to your profile and see whatever number of posts you've allowed there, it would be better to be able to go directly to a full list of all of your posts.

"Links related to" feature

How does this feature work? I've noticed that whenever somebody first posts a thread, regardless of the content of it, the related links are almost always the same. Several of my friends have complained about this because sometimes the related link points to a thread in a tribe they're no longer subscribed to, and they can't do anything about it.

Any ideas on how to resolve this?

Conclusion.

The term pastafarian is not able to be defended as independantly concieved from the far anticedent and more widely recognized religious term, Rastafarian. This fact makes the former term's promotion an attempt at public defamation. All that tribe.net would need to do, at my suggestion, to be no longer complicit in such defamation, would be to relegate a users ability to identify his or her religion as Pastafarian, to having them write it in themselves.

Brainstorm rejects...Stormdrain...

I guess those of us who aren't allowed to post in Brainstorm get to hang out here, hmm? I think I'll call this place Stormdrain. ;-)

Where no matter what is said, someone takes offense, even if it's a simple idea. Some storm starts on Brainstorm, and not of the idea kind, and someone gets shoved down the drain. It was me this time.

I don't even know who did it. Or why. Or even when. I'd guess if it was something terribly offensive, my posts would have been pulled, right? Instead they are still there, with remarks. And as usual, I am not allowed to say anything.

I'm not allowed to post in some places. I'm not allowed to talk to some people. But why is it always okay for those people to post? Why do *I* have to be the one to ignore?

My idea would be to make things more clear. I can't not do something if I don't know what it is I'm not supposed to do. I get picked on by people if I delete a thread. But I also get told by TOU that if I don't like a response in a thread I create that I shouldn't bother them with complaints, I should just delete the thread. So either way, I am supposed to put up with whatever people want to dish out. I don't understand that.

Hi,

It would be nice if there were some small graphical indicator in a thumbnail when a person is in your friends list.

People change their pics and names often enough that it can get confusing some times.

Even just a star or something down where the online indicator is would help.

Please Add Music Modules Like on Myspace

Greetings, All and Thanks for Having Me,

The only thing I feel Tribe is lacking is music modules, which is the ONLY reason I'm on myspace. I hear this a lot from other Tribe people.

Are there any plans to add music modules? If not, is it possible to do so? If it's not do-able, I'd love to know why. I think it would be great to have music on my page that automatically plays (or not) when people visit my page.

Many Thanks,
-MamaSanyo

hi smarties,
Is it possible to have a tribe that anyone could see the home page and the discussion topic headings but not be able to click into the discussion thread or photos etc. I'd like something in between moderated and private. is it possible? I mean, it seems silly that the only difference between a public and moderated site is you have to ask to join. It'd be nice if moderated were just a little more private. ok now i've said the same thing twice.

I moderate a few tribes that get the same question posted over and over again. I was thinking it would be awesome if the moderator could create a FAQ that pointed to previous threads in the tribe so users could more easily find the wealth of data in the history of a tribe's content.

just a thought, hope you like it.

Spell check available...sort of...

I know that people have asked for spell check on this site many times. I just glanced down the first page over on Brainstorm and again someone had suggested it recently.

I don't keep up with all the add-ons for computers, because I usually can't afford them. But I was asking my brother about the mouse that has the light instead of a rolling ball. He said he had one to give me. It has two buttons, and a wheel. It says "Logitech" on the top. I don't know anything about this mouse, all I did was plug it in.

That extra button has all kinds of features, and I have no idea what it taps into either. I didn't download anything to go with the mouse, or install anything. One of the features is spell check. On the second button there are options to change the font, the color, the size, all that, but none of it carries over into the finished/posted message. I could change all the text to purple here, but it won't make a difference on the message board.

The spell check is fabulous though. It will underline a word that is unknown, and if I click on that underlined word with the second button, it will give me suggested spellings, and will also let me ignore the spelling or learn the spelling. So for personal names, I can teach it to learn that specific name or brand name.

The thing is like magic. For my online games, I can replay the exact game I just played by hitting that second button. Or a new game by hitting the primary button. Unfortunately it's set up for right-handed people. So all my main clicking is done now with my middle finger of my left hand.

I don't know how much these things cost or what kinds of computers can use them, but it might be a wise investment for anyone. Simply because it will check the spelling of ANYTHING I type, as I go along. In my email. In any messages I write here on Tribe.net. In my PMs. So that I don't need to turn on or off anything in any site or application, the magic mouse watches over my spelling everywhere.

This is what I have, in black:
http://www.epinions.com/content_90068192900
Manufacturer Part Number 830386-0000

The epinion writer says:
"The first time you use the mouse, you will have to set it up. Setting up could not have been simpler for me. I turned off my computer and plugged in the computer. The mouse itself is USB, but it also came with an adapter to plug into a mouse port (PS/2), so anyone can use this mouse.

Are you waiting to hear what else I did to set up this computer? Oh. I turned it on. Yup, that was it. I was shocked. I hadn't even gotten the install cd out of the holder yet when I realized the mouse was already working. The software is included, however, so I am assuming that some people will actually have to install it. "

======

I didn't have to install anything. It just worked. Perfect. And you can see at the bottom of that page linked above that there are a variety of prices, under $20.00.

Looks like it works for everything too. Try it.

Email notification when Tribe.net reboots...

Some sites I've seen (no, I don't know where, it was awhile back) have an email notification to let people know when their site comes back up. It can be something temporary, like an hour or two. Other times the site is being redone or something and it's days or weeks before it comes back up.

I thought it might be handy for Tribe.net to have a similar option on that "Donut" page. Where we can enter our email address to be notified when the site is back up. That way people don't need to keep checking to see if it's available.

It might also be really nice to see an "estimated time until site is available" on that "Donut" page. "Shortly" isn't 14 or more hours. LOL! Sometimes a quick fix is started and it's realized it's going to be days before it's finished (I've had that on my car, anyway).

Thanks for the consideration of this idea.

Mike C. Do a synopsis of the long thread...

The one you keep referring to in Brainstorm. Leave out all the negativity and accusations, etc. Outline the points you consider worthy of discussion, things you felt were going somewhere before the thread was deleted. I don't even remember what the thread was about. But making an outline of main points and starting a discussion here, where everyone is allowed to participate, might be a good idea.

It wouldn't be so great to post the entire thread in one big lump as a single post. Because, if it contains something objectionable to someone (er...like me, LOL) and it is reported, TOU cannot just remove a segment of that entire long post, they would have to remove the entire post. Leaving you back at square one.

Remember also a point someone made elsewhere. Copy and paste can be altered. I hadn't thought of that before. But it had happened to me, with bits of text being copied and pasted and added to and changed. Copy and paste may be used as a weapon or something to hurt people. So it might be better for everyone if you made the outline without using quotes or names, and see if anyone is still interested in discussing whatever was mentioned in the long thread that was deleted.

i would use the module that shows recent posts if i could select which threads showed. some of the threads are interesting, and i'd like to be able to more easily draw my friends into those conversations. but some of it is either private or boring and i don't want it showing up on my profile. if people could select which of their posts showed up on their profiles, it would be a really good way of allowing them to show (rather than tell or blog) more about themselves.

organization/consolidation----------->conversation?

There are a bunch of raw food tribes with not much going on in any of them on any given day -- they lack the numbers that make dialogue happen. There are a ton of animal welfare/liberation tribes -- and it seems to me like the amount of specialization they have to offer does not make up for the lack of conversation that happens when you have people too spread out in tribes on the same topic.

There are seven roller skating tribes, although to be fair two of them are roller derby and some allow for talk about ice skating, too -- but can't we all just get along? We have more in common than not!

In some cases, I understand why there are tribes that seem too similar to exist independently. I understand why there is a tribe built for less snarky Burning Man oriented communication. Although I don't quite understand why we need two such "nice" BM tribes. (If any tribe population could support similar, splinter tribes, though, it would be the Burners. Still one suspects there would be more lively non-snarky BM dialogue if everyone who got annoyed with the main BM tribe all went to the same alternative BM tribe.

There are 61 depression-oriented tribes. Some of these tribes, not surprisingly, have a population of one. Is depression in Cincinatti so different from that suffered in Chicago or Canada that it requires its own tribe? Nobody's had anything to say there since 2006. Depression-era glass, of course, deserves its own tribe. Of course nobody's had anything to say there since 2006 either. Not that Depression-era glass should be a mere topic in one of the numerous glass tribes.

Sometimes the appropriate tribe in which to discuss your topic is labeled such that you can't find it. For yummy New Age weirdness, I like 2012 the best. The topics hardly stick to 2012, and there are so many members there, you are likely to get a good and expedient response to any question you might have about chem trails, crop circles, or the impending Apocalypse. There may just not be that much to say about 2012 proper yet. But it is a livelier spot than most of the myriad specialized (and silent) tribes dedicated to the occult/New Age/New Edge/etc.

Anyway, I think it's good that Tribe's a kind of wild weed, growing itself according to the whims of its participants. But sometimes I think Tribe would benefit from some organizational support, consolidation. Nothing mandatory. I think the point is to get those of us who want to discuss the same stuff in the same places -- and I'm wondering if Tribe could possibly support its members a little more in this.

In actuality...
There seems to be a mis-understanding about my most recent blog, so please allow me to explain further and in more detail...

First of all, I am NOT encouraging anyone to use magic AGAINST anyone, what I am suggesting is that we unify our energies to STOP technology from a): destroying this grid called Earth and it's global community of lifeforms, and b) from giving a space to the military forces of Earth where they may emprison and force people into their dark ways of being. Governments are rushing (particularly the U.S.A.) to create what I call truly DARK forms of technology, that they will use even on their own citizens who do not comply with their agenda. This must be stopped, the only way is to use an action that they have no real clue about, that action is PROTECTION MAGIC.

Hitler used the same magic staff as Napoleon Bonaparte, this staff is an ancient tool of war. It is believed that it went missing from Germany and resurfaced in the U.S.A., many believe George Bush has it in his possession at this time. If you know about the various forms of magic then you will understand that this is NOT good or of good. This is the kind of stuff we are up against, guys like Bush use magic to create their path, we who are of LIght MUST do the same.

When I say we need to rid the Earth of low vibratory beings and their low vibratory tools, I am NOT saying we need to attack them or get rid of them by using our magic against them, what I am saying is that we need to PROTECT our existence from them. THEY will destroy themselves, and THEY will elliminate themselves from this grid by THEIR own actions. What we need to do is PROTECT ourselves and our Earth communities from their evil/ignorant plans and intentions. This is why the angels have lent us their hands at this time, and this is why I have protection around me personally, I do vibtrate in this way and am active in this process. YOU can be too, that is my POINT.

Yes, a lot of people will die during this shift, it is written in the cards. My spirit tells me that only about 3 million humans will be left on Earth by 2013, this will be of THEIR own karma and doing, it will ALSO be of their CHOICE, for not all beings here wish to EVOLVE. It is the choice of some to just WITNESS these events occuring, it is also the intention and choice of some to PREVENT humanity from evolving at this time. ALL GOVERNMENTS ARE IN THIS ROLE at this time. The wealthy dont want to let go of money, power or position. There are people using magic to control the masses and their actions at this time, some do this in disguise as trying to "help", when really all they are trying to do is keep the peace while they continue to rape and pilage this Earth and its MANY communities.

We humans seem to think WE are all that matters, yet we are a part of a very delicate intricately linked web of life and magic of living forms, participating in an on going evolution of beingness. Some of us think that we will all evolve, and we will, but NOT all in the same direction. Those who worship technology over life will find themselves being downloaded into a matrix of hell that will start with the micro-chip implant that is ALREADY happening at this time, will they see it as hell? No, they will think it is the SAFE way to go, fear will be their motivaing factor, for they fear life itself and DEATH.

In truth I wish this world of ours was not like this, that our options were different, but this is it baby! Like it or not this is where it is all heading. The Earth is raising her energy much like we get a fever when sick, and yes, this rising of energy will kill a lot of people. But before you point fingers at me accusing me of not caring for these beings, I suggest you take a good look at the fact that most of us DONT want to change. How many of us know the environment is suffering? How long have we known this? Yet we get up and go live the life we live by driving our cars, flying everywhere, and paying taxes to a system we KNOW doesnt care? hmmm? Steven Harper is looking like a good candidate for our next election here in Canada, yet he will NOT change anything to upset the economy. This is where most of us are at, we care as long as WE dont have to change.

Time is up, my spirit years ago told me that things wil really start going totally nuts around 2008-09, by the looks of it my spirit is right. I have cried over and over again after being fed psychic images of what is to come and why, I DO care and feel for all beings. However I know my true purpose, and that my friends is to PROTECT this magical grid called Earth and its incredibly varied forms of life. This is something that is beyond the human realm. We are not so imporatant that everything must die around us while we twiddle our thumbs and act like spoiled children always wanting things our own way. I dont care if I live through this shift, what I do care is that I give as much as I can of myself to the Earth and to ALL of life at this time. This means understanding energy and what is available to me. The angels ARE available, Archangel Micheal is the controller of the armies and varied forms of authority in this Universe. In the past he has helped us maintain a certain form of democracy, this is why all tyrants of the past have eventually met their match. But today is different, he will only assist those who are truly in harmony with universal law and order, this means he will NOT be serving the governments of our world unless they quickly learn to comply with this form of universal law and order. That is why he protects me from ignorant hands, and he is here to protect YOU too, if you are true and of love.

My suggestion would block technology and peoples ability to use it in negative ways against each other and the Earth at this time, plain and simple. The rest will be a product of its own doing.
peace out
G.Force

I dont know if this has been addressed before... But right now im too busy/lazy to look...
Anyway if it has, well, im casting another vote.

Do you pay attention to the number of friends a tribe member has next to their avatar?
I do... but involuntarily... just because its there.

But who really cares??? Why should that number even be displayed ? Maybe inside of the profile, it's fine... but on the icon... Its like wearing a medal saying "hey...look how many friends I have... Im cool..."

If i wanted to collect "friends" , i would do that on myspace.

Let's talk a little bit of politics, even if it is not my favorite subject, because it is no more than an utilitarian structure, quite relevant to some specific conception of life as a manufacturing deal of all kinds of tricks and lies ! I think that everybody can agree with me in the fact that U.S administration is doing actually a very bad job in the world. Unfortunately, for the majority of people in all countries this gives a very negative image of that big nation.
I remember that when I was a boy I used to read a lot of comics and my prefered ones were of two legendary heros : Blek The Rock and Mister Swing. I lived too many terrible adventures with these two young patriots who fought against the British Army in order to free their native land. Therefore the American Revolution and the memory of all those brave and honest men who traced the path for so much dreams on human rights and dignity are still alive in my mind. I also know that America have been the last refuge for so many individuals all over the world searching with hope and enthusiasm an alternative homeland for their erratic lives. Too much thinkers, artists, religious men, politicians, philosophers, scientists, brillant searchers could find there a nourrishing perspective for their high potential.
Nevertheless we must say that things have changed widely in time process. I have read somewhere that president Roosvelt have adressed to american people that terrible warning : don't let the military and industrial complex handle the power ! It would be very dangerous for democratic issues and for all the values on which America have been built ! And yet his premonitory vision is a reality now. Economical interests of a very little but influential lobby are still defining U.S policies till the point where everything is under the increasing power of investing institutions and companies. It is absolutely a nonsense ! Accordingly too much contradictions and mistakes are made actually by the american administration. Everything illegal and even immoral become acceptable in order to save the huge benefits of a big machine taking control of its own creators ! The need for more oil which is the true label for all kinds of interventionism is still a strategical position that provides a controversial legitimacy to the worst page of all american history.
I don't personally judge anything in that matter. All what I can say is that a very energic shock has to be given to american consciousness (and of course quite different from the 9/11 terrible catastrophy) in order to give a chance for peace and justice inside home boundaries and throughout the world.

Public relations policy... and the participation of users

This post demands a response.

Recently I made a ToU complaint regarding conduct of another user. I e-mailed abuse@tribe.net I waited yet did not get a response. A friend had a similar response from tribe. At this point I took the problem to ToU guy, and posted my conundrum in Tribe brainstorm.
I found challenges there to a process of exchange of ideas... that culminated in the deletion of the thread... and another one in which I addressed the policy regarding the expulsion of a member.
I was later told by the moderator that the topic was not germane to the purposes of the tribe although... this had been stated elsewhere
http://blog.tribe.net/thread/04d2d53b-6d7e-40bc-b927-7e4c89cc94ad#d2006a17-ad48-48f4-b637-bb422bb7fa55
. . . and ideas.
I was told that this was not the place for discussion of policy... only of features.
Although one is relative to the other... It is a response not unlike the first one I got after my E-mails.
I am moving the idea over here in the hopes I can have a free exchange of ideas.

Social interaction is a function of Tribe... there are problems with the Managements public relations policy... and how they solve problems by restricting the manner of the solution.
The ToU is often applied in a way that is "more ToU reports=more relevance of the evidence"... this has been taken advantage of by users to continually... as a pattern, report users and as a pattern... continually limit their statutory freedom of speech.
Some aspects may have believability... as a comprehensive topic however... it is a manipulation of ToU.
And Tribe has been partner to this.
I must call the unsubscription process into question.
Users need to be able to respond in a manner that encourages transparency... to at least the concepts of the accusations made.

Tribe needs to seriously reconsider the manner in which they respond to users who have legitimate concerns that diverge from the methods of Mediation at present.
Open communication is a primary concern... when managing human resources... which is the bread and butter of Tribe.
The cycle of discontent and then nonparticipation hurts Tribe financially.
It hurts the free exchange of ideas... which is why the users are here.

Tribe needs to encourage the participation of the users... rather than divert or discontinue participation.

Editing posts

Okay...

I've read a lot of people who want the ability to edit posts. I've also read a few who think it's a bad idea.

I think it's nice that if I read my response, and I see a typo, I can hit [backspace] and fix it. That's cool. A lot of systems would double-post such a thing. That's not cool.

But the ability to just drop in and edit a post? Woo -- that can be a mess.

I've been sysoping BBS systems since the 80's and whenever I've seen the ability to edit posts, the people who could do so tended to use that ability to screw with other people. It's just a mess. People rewrite history and fiddle even more with other people and no one knows for sure if what they quote out will get deleted or changed, and it just becomes a mess.

I know that most folks are thinking it'll only be used to correct typos and such, and I appreciate the hope that holds for the human race. Idealists are a rare breed.

A method of correcting typos already exists. You can hit [backspace].

Or, if the typo is really bad, you post a correction and a brief apology ('casue we ALL screw up on occasion).

And as far as typos in general, well... I might be more tolerant than most folks, I don't know, but by and large, i don't care about people getting typos in what they enter. Posts are a little more fluid and if typos creep in, I tend to just glide right on by. Conversely, I don't panic so much when I discover I've acidentally typed "teh" instead of "the". Or misspelled "accidentally".

And folks that chip on you because of typos? Well, that's just because they have abnormally small genitalia. You can tell 'em I said so.

I am also a member of OpenDiary, and I love Tribe.net and its interface much better:

However, two things OD has that I wish Tribe would put into place (pretty please, pretty please?) are:

1 - The ability to search within my own blog for topics I've written about rather than having to click back, back and back through a few hundred entries to find something in particular.
2 - The ability to not lose everything I've written, because, with just one click, I can upload all of my blog as text to a file on my computer. I know this is not necessary for those organized people who save each entry as text and then paste it. But, for those of us who love immediate gratification and are risk takers who love the glory of typing straight onto the screen, this is a most helpful feature I veritably worship!!!
